Owl Astrology

When we think of the new year, we also think of the Chinese New Year and the astrological animal for that year. No, Chinese astrology do not include an owl, however, the owl is included in two other cultures: the Native American Totem Animal and  India's Pancha Pakshi Shastra.

In the Native American culture, it is believed that your astrological or totem animal chooses you at birth base on the character traits you will need to acquire or strengthen throughout your life.

The owl is your totem animal if your birth date falls between  November 23 and December 21.  People with the owl totem are said to be easy going and adventure seeking. However, this also means they can be reckless and somewhat thoughtless at times, which can place them in rather sticky situations. Still, the owl person is a great listener and can be enthusiastic. They are very adaptable and can do well in any occupation, but they excel as artists and teachers.

The owl serves to remind you to veer away from greed and excesses.

The Pancha-Pakshi Sastra is the most popular astrology mythology in South India. Pancha means 5 and Pakshi means birds, thus, their astrology is represented by five birds, the owl being one of them. Unfortunately, in order to know your birth pakshi, you will need to know your birth star according to the Vedic Astrology and the Paksha of the moon at the time of your birth; not an easy task to do.

Well, let's explore the owl Pakshi anyway.  It actually sounds similar to the Native American totem owl.

Owl Pakshi people are said to be very ambitious with lots of confidence. They are energetic and sometimes need to calm down their enthusiasm. They also have short tempers that they need to learn to control. They are intelligent and make great students.

What I find fasinating is that I, personally, don't precieve recklessness and adventure seeking associated with owls, yet here we have two totally different cultures that do and are similiar in their intrepetations. What do you think? Let me know in the comment area below.

Snowy Owls Are At It Again

In the last few years we have seen an usual number of snowy owls migrating south, and further south than usual, too. One was even spotted in Bermuda last year. This year, biologists are surprised to see  that the migration, or irruption as its called, has already started. Irruptions usually start in mid November, but, this year a number of snowy owls have been spotted in the Great Lakes in mid October.  They don't expect the numbers to increase again this year, but who knows? After all, these beautiful white birds have been unpredictable lately.

Sadly, it is said that when an irruption starts earlier than usual, it's because their Arctic food supply has become scarce, and that the migrating birds are in worse psychical shape than normal. Hopefully, they will find more food during the migration which will fatten them up and give them more energy to go on. Still, it is expected that many wildlife conservation facilities will be very busy with injured or starving snowy owls this year.

Some of us will have the opportunity this year to enjoy their presence, but, keep in mind that getting too close to these birds can pose a threat to them. Enjoy them at a distance, perhaps through a long lens camera or binoculars.

You see owls here, there, and everywhere these days. Owls have become more popular than ever before and owl lovers can't be any happier.  You see them on the Internet, including social media, on gift products, blogs, party decorations and favors, DIYs, and just about any merchandise you can think of. They even make the news on occasion. Yes, this is the era of owls, and, hopefully, it will be a long one, if not forever :)

Owls in Fall

If  you'd like to go out and do some owl watching, this is a good time to do it. By fall, all the owlets have 'flown the coop' and the parents are now free to roam and explore distant, and hopefully, more plentiful, hunting grounds. This is also the time when the owls are the most vocal, making it easier to spot them.

It is not known why owls are more vocal at this time of the year, but some speculate it is simply because they now have more energy after months of caring for their young. Others think that they are broadcasting, or 'networking', with other owls for territory. Perhaps both theories are correct. In any event, the mild fall weather with warm colored leaves can make this Owling (owl watching) time a most pleasant experience. But, remember to not get too close.

For tips on Owling and to learn to differentiate owls' calls, check out this prior blog post.

In the meanwhile, cuddle up with these warm owls in fall themed items:

What It Means To Dream Of An Owl

People have always been fascinated and mystified by dreams. Why do we dream? How? What does mean? Or, is there any real meaning? There have been many studies conducted on the subject with only partial understanding of the results. Many state that much of our suppressed emotions find release in the dreamworld; either literally or through symbolic images. Others speculate that it is the way our brain sorts out all that we have collected throughout the day. Then, there are those which state that many dreams are precognitive, meaning they forewarn us of future events. These precognitive dreams can be played out exactly as it will occur in our waking state, but more often then not, they are given via symbols.

Professional dream interpreters have been around in many different cultures for thousands of years, and one of the main symbols they interpret is the owl. So, what does it mean to dream of an owl?  Well, it depends on many different things: the setting, the action, and even the color of the owl. Below is a list of some of the most common interpretations:

- Seeing an owl in a house: family troubles are coming.
- Scaring an owl away: disappointing circumstances will improve.
- Catching a owl: great happiness on the way.
- Hearing an owl hoot: you will soon encounter a deceitful person.
- Hearing an owl scream: a death.
- Seeing a dead owl: illness (not death).
- Owl pecking your eyes: time to face the facts.
- Seeing a white, or snowy owl: a romantic date coming up, or     happy surprises.
- Seeing an owl flying away from a branch: you will narrowly escape danger.

Please be advised, however, that this list should be seen as just a general guideline as not all interpreters agree, and meaning of dreams can be very personalized.
