It will soon be time to say good-bye to 2015 and hello to 2016. 2015 brought some good and bad news to the owls of the world. The major good news occurred in the United Kingdom where aggressive conservation efforts resulted in a large increase of Barn Owls. Yea! As for the bad news, the endangered and federally protected Northern Spotted Owls have been at war with the Barred Owls within the Pacific Northwest Forest, and it is not likely that the Spotted Owl will endure without our help. It is said that Barred Owls now heavily outnumber the Spotted Owls. This is in addition to the continual decline of Spotted Owls worldwide due to deforestation. Clearly, the two species cannot co-exist, but there is not suficient land space suitable for the less aggressive Spotted Owls. A lot more work and effort will be needed this upcoming year to help the Spotted Owl survive. Hopefully, with the help of the big conservation organizations, such as, the National Wildlife Federation and Conservation Northwest, we will see some improvements in 2016.
On a lighter note, a new year means a new calendar, and so I present you with an array of owl wall calendars for a hooting good year.

They even make the news on occasion. Yes, this is the era of owls, and, hopefully, it will be a long one, if not forever :)

Many superstitions from the beginning of known history surrounds the owl. It it said to be a creature of darkness, magic, and death. It is no wonder, then, that owls play a major role in our national holiday, Halloween (See ' The Owl and the Witch'). One interesting myth of the owl, based on its link to darkness and death, is that it can live among ghosts. Consequently, abandoned buildings with nesting owls within were believed to be haunted. The Barn Owl whose nesting habitat is in old barns and buildings was often referred to as the Ghost Owl.
Of course, we all know better now, but we still love our owls at Halloween. So, enjoy these owl and ghost themed products below. You just might fine the one perfect for your Halloween plans.
This week let's just have a warm fuzzing good time and view some popular videos of unlikely animal friendships, specifically, of course, with owls. There are records of owls being close friends, even to the point of being inseparable, with cats and dogs. I'm sure these cases occur with the owls being raised or kept by humans, or a least, I haven't found any record showing otherwise. Still, animals are amazing and there is much we can learn from them. Enjoy!
