Well, Owl Be - 10 Fascinating Facts About Owls

No question about it, owls are one of the most fascinating creatures on the planet. We have learned a lot about their mysterious ways. Yet, it seems there is more to learn. For now, though, lets review 10 of the most fascinating facts about them:

1. All owls can rotate their heads 270 degrees in any direction. (Not 360 degrees as was commonly believed).

2. Owl are silent flyers, allowing them to sneak up on their prey.

3. Owls eyes are tubular and fixed. They must turn their heads to see in different directions.

4. They are able to to make meals out of prey that are bigger than them, such as a fawn.

5. The large Fish Owls actually do prey on fish, mostly salmon.

6. Owls can swallow many of their prey whole. They then later regurgitate what is called 'pellets' which are the indigestible parts, such as fur and bones.

7. Burrowing Owls nest in the ground and place dung around their entrance to entice their favorite snacks, dung beetles.

8. Owls can be found anywhere in the world, except the Antarctica.

9. Owls can make some of the scariest noises in the animal kingdom. Some of their calls seem to come straight out of a horror film. Listen to some examples here.

  10. The owls flattened face allows sounds to funnel to their ears; emphasizing their hearing ability about 10 times.

What are favorite facts about owls?

Owls Birthdays

PINK OWL YOUR BIRTHDAY CUPCAKE Poster
Pink Owl Your Birthday Cupcake By BY CYRA

Ever wonder how long owls live? The answer depends on the species and circumstance. There are over 200 species of owls in the world and they all have different lifespans.  In the wild, a long-lived owl can, in general, live up to 20 years; whereas, a short-lived owl may live only a year. In captivity, though, owls live twice as long as their wild counterparts.

The longest lived owl is the Great Horned Owl that, in the wild, can live up to  20 - 25 years. In captivity, this bird can reach 30 years. One captive Great Horned owl lived up to the ripe old age of 34.

Another long lived owl is the Snowy Owl. This species, in general, live 10-15 years in the wild, and about 20, or a little more, in captivity.

Screech Owls live, on average in the wild, 10 years.  In captivity, they can have up to 20 birthdays.

The shortest lived owl is the Barn Owl. their average lifespan is 4 years.  In captivity, Barn Owls can have 10 -15 birthdays.

Overall, if an owl survives through its fledgling stage, every birthday is a true cause for celebration.

...And with the current popularity of owls in the human world, owl themed birthday celebrations are all the rage, especially with kids.

Summer Swimming Owls

It's summer time and that means lots of fun time at the pool! Not only do we love just playing in the water, but many people, yours truly included, love swimming. Owls, on the other hand - not so much. Actually, it's probably not so much that they don't like it, but that it's so much work for them as their feathers are less water resistant than many other birds. Therefore, they save this activity for times of emergencies only.

How do owls swim? Well, by doing the breaststroke, of course! Just watch this video clip of a Great Horned Owl swimming after he was forced down by a couple of peregrine falcons. He reportedly does eventually reach the shore, and after waiting some time to dry off, flew away. So we are all good.

In celebration of the season, here are some 'owly' summertime products available for purchase:

Owls Make Great Dads

Not many animals are great at fatherhood, but owls are. They are one of the most devoted and hardworking dads in the animal kingdom, despite the fact that mama owl can be up to 25% bigger than him. Owl dads are there from the very beginning by helping mama owl search for the perfect  nest. Then, as mama owl incubates the eggs, he spends most of his time flying back and forth to feed her. It doesn't stop there, either.  Once the babies are hatched, he still has to bring home the bacon, or, er..in this case, maybe the rat, at least until the little ones are big enough for mama owl to go hunting herself. While she is out, it's owl dad's turn to babysit. Even after the owlets start hopping out of the nest to 'earn' their wings, owl dad is right there with mama owl to help them along.  Don't you just love daddy owls?

I said it before and I'll say it again... 'Hootray' for Daddy Owls!

..and, with Father's Day coming soon, let's not forget all the devoted and hard working human dads, too. Hooray, Dads!

Owl Mother's Day

Mother's Day will soon be here; a time to acknowledge all mommies that, not only provide lots of love and care, but who also make many sacrifices for their offspring. There is no denying that motherhood is hard work, and mama owls are no exception.

The exact breeding season varies depending on the owl species, food supply, and weather; however, the  female owl lays 3 or 4 eggs usually during the months of February and March. Then it's a long haul to keep those precious eggs warm and safe, despite the cold. Incubation for owl eggs lasts about a month. Can you imagine having to sit still that long?! Let alone on eggs and in the cold. But that's what mama owl has to do, and she's very good at it.

Just before the laying, mama owl starts losing most of the feathers on her belly (brood patch) so that the warm blood vessels there can serve as a heater to the eggs. So, on top of everything else, she partially naked! Come on, you got to admire mama owl. It's a good thing, too, that Mr. Owl is a good papa. While mama owl is sitting on her eggs, papa owl is hunting and delivering food to her.

After the owlets hatch, it's a full time job feeding all those hungry mouths. Not only that, but not all the eggs may hatch at the same time, so mama owl may still need to 'sit' for awhile. Again, it's a good thing papa owl is there to help. Once all the eggs are hatched, mama owl can leave papa owl to babysit while she spreads her wings and do some of the hunting herself.

Like other raptors, owlets remain dependent on their parents for several weeks, even months. Mama owl will keep close and continue feeding them until they learn how to fly and hunt on their own.  I say, good job, mama owl!

Let's also give a round of applause to all the loving and hard working human mothers.
