Owls Birthdays

PINK OWL YOUR BIRTHDAY CUPCAKE Poster
Pink Owl Your Birthday Cupcake By BY CYRA

Ever wonder how long owls live? The answer depends on the species and circumstance. There are over 200 species of owls in the world and they all have different lifespans.  In the wild, a long-lived owl can, in general, live up to 20 years; whereas, a short-lived owl may live only a year. In captivity, though, owls live twice as long as their wild counterparts.

The longest lived owl is the Great Horned Owl that, in the wild, can live up to  20 - 25 years. In captivity, this bird can reach 30 years. One captive Great Horned owl lived up to the ripe old age of 34.

Another long lived owl is the Snowy Owl. This species, in general, live 10-15 years in the wild, and about 20, or a little more, in captivity.

Screech Owls live, on average in the wild, 10 years.  In captivity, they can have up to 20 birthdays.

The shortest lived owl is the Barn Owl. their average lifespan is 4 years.  In captivity, Barn Owls can have 10 -15 birthdays.

Overall, if an owl survives through its fledgling stage, every birthday is a true cause for celebration.

...And with the current popularity of owls in the human world, owl themed birthday celebrations are all the rage, especially with kids.

Summer Swimming Owls

It's summer time and that means lots of fun time at the pool! Not only do we love just playing in the water, but many people, yours truly included, love swimming. Owls, on the other hand - not so much. Actually, it's probably not so much that they don't like it, but that it's so much work for them as their feathers are less water resistant than many other birds. Therefore, they save this activity for times of emergencies only.

How do owls swim? Well, by doing the breaststroke, of course! Just watch this video clip of a Great Horned Owl swimming after he was forced down by a couple of peregrine falcons. He reportedly does eventually reach the shore, and after waiting some time to dry off, flew away. So we are all good.

In celebration of the season, here are some 'owly' summertime products available for purchase:

Owlets Must Earn Their Wings

Have you ever seen a baby owl learn to fly? It can be quite comical yet, I imagine it must be scary for them. They don't just fly away when their wing feathers are developed, no, these baby birds must earn their wings. The first thing they'll do is stand on the edge of their nest and flap their wings like crazy to strenghten them. Then, they will courageously hop from one branch to another as they 'practice'. If they miss or try to fly before they are actually ready, the way is down, like ground down. When there, they will continue to learn while mama and daddy owl stand by to provide food and protection. Depending on the species, it can take weeks for the owlets to learn, so they can be seen hoping and flapping on the ground for quite some time.  If you do see one and it's not injured, please do not intervene. Remember that this is normal and its parents are nearby taking care of it. (If the owlet is injured, see What To Do - Injured or Sick Owl).

Fledgling owls learn to fly

One thing for sure, baby owls are adorable!

Owls Make Great Dads

Not many animals are great at fatherhood, but owls are. They are one of the most devoted and hardworking dads in the animal kingdom, despite the fact that mama owl can be up to 25% bigger than him. Owl dads are there from the very beginning by helping mama owl search for the perfect  nest. Then, as mama owl incubates the eggs, he spends most of his time flying back and forth to feed her. It doesn't stop there, either.  Once the babies are hatched, he still has to bring home the bacon, or, er..in this case, maybe the rat, at least until the little ones are big enough for mama owl to go hunting herself. While she is out, it's owl dad's turn to babysit. Even after the owlets start hopping out of the nest to 'earn' their wings, owl dad is right there with mama owl to help them along.  Don't you just love daddy owls?

I said it before and I'll say it again... 'Hootray' for Daddy Owls!

..and, with Father's Day coming soon, let's not forget all the devoted and hard working human dads, too. Hooray, Dads!
