Mama, can we keep the Owl?

We see  owls as cute, even funny, and just plain cool, so naturally many of us would love to have one as a pet. After all, you see them that way in movies, books, and T.V., such as in the Harry Potter series, so "why not?"you say. Well, unfortunately, there are a number of 'why nots' in owning an owl.

For starters, in the U.S.,  it is illegal for private individuals to keep one. Even those in breeding programs, rehab, and educational business or conservation must obtain a special permit or license before they can have one. Even then, the law don't allow, these professionals to really 'own' them. The birds are considered as loans from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and can be recalled at any time if permit conditions are not upheld.

Then, there are all these other reasons why you don't really want an owl as a pet:

1) Due to their nature, they cannot be kept in a cage. They must be tethered to a perch (a large one at that). And, if the bird is imprinted on you, it can be very aggressive to everyone else it comes in contact with. With their sharp beaks, talons, and overall strength, they can cause some major harm. This extends to other animals, as well. So, for one thing, it would be very difficult for you to take a vacation, or leave it in the care of anyone else for any reason. An owl can actually die from a 'broken heart' if  separated from his care giver.

2) Owls are naturally destructive. If you think dogs or other pets can be, the owl is even more so. They'll attack just about anything: pillows, clothes, couches, wood, etc. Anything they can shred, they will.

3) Owls still capable of flying will need to keep it up on  a regular basis based on their wild nature, as well as, for exercise.

4) Like most birds, they can be very messy. They molt a lot feathers and throw up pellets of fur, bones, and whatever else all the time. And, of course, let's not forget the poop. On top of that, these wild birds have, what is called, a  'ceca' at the base of their intestines that they have to empty daily, which, if you can imagine it, smells worse than the poop.

5) Owls have long lives. Depending on the species, an owl can live from 10 to 30 years. That is one long commitment.

6) Owls are solely carnivores and have very strict dietary needs.  The best is to feed them whole rodents, and other small animals, which would not only be difficult to get, but very unpleasant. Also, don't forget the pellets afterwards.

So, for all these reasons, let's just enjoy them as the wild birds as they are and meant to be with just the professionals handling them as necessary.

Owlets Must Earn Their Wings

Have you ever seen a baby owl learn to fly? It can be quite comical yet, I imagine it must be scary for them. They don't just fly away when their wing feathers are developed, no, these baby birds must earn their wings. The first thing they'll do is stand on the edge of their nest and flap their wings like crazy to strenghten them. Then, they will courageously hop from one branch to another as they 'practice'. If they miss or try to fly before they are actually ready, the way is down, like ground down. When there, they will continue to learn while mama and daddy owl stand by to provide food and protection. Depending on the species, it can take weeks for the owlets to learn, so they can be seen hoping and flapping on the ground for quite some time.  If you do see one and it's not injured, please do not intervene. Remember that this is normal and its parents are nearby taking care of it. (If the owlet is injured, see What To Do - Injured or Sick Owl).

One thing for sure, baby owls are adorable!

Owl Mother's Day

Mother's Day will soon be here; a time to acknowledge all mommies that, not only provide lots of love and care, but who also make many sacrifices for their offspring. There is no denying that motherhood is hard work, and mama owls are no exception.

The exact breeding season varies depending on the owl species, food supply, and weather; however, the  female owl lays 3 or 4 eggs usually during the months of February and March. Then it's a long haul to keep those precious eggs warm and safe, despite the cold. Incubation for owl eggs lasts about a month. Can you imagine having to sit still that long?! Let alone on eggs and in the cold. But that's what mama owl has to do, and she's very good at it.

Just before the laying, mama owl starts losing most of the feathers on her belly (brood patch) so that the warm blood vessels there can serve as a heater to the eggs. So, on top of everything else, she partially naked! Come on, you got to admire mama owl. It's a good thing, too, that Mr. Owl is a good papa. While mama owl is sitting on her eggs, papa owl is hunting and delivering food to her.

After the owlets hatch, it's a full time job feeding all those hungry mouths. Not only that, but not all the eggs may hatch at the same time, so mama owl may still need to 'sit' for awhile. Again, it's a good thing papa owl is there to help. Once all the eggs are hatched, mama owl can leave papa owl to babysit while she spreads her wings and do some of the hunting herself.

Like other raptors, owlets remain dependent on their parents for several weeks, even months. Mama owl will keep close and continue feeding them until they learn how to fly and hunt on their own.  I say, good job, mama owl!

Let's also give a round of applause to all the loving and hard working human mothers.
